The 2015-2016 fiscal year was a triumphant time for the city of Houston. Houston had just hosted NCAA Final Four 2016 and the city was in the final stages of preparation for Super Bowl LI in early 2017. Visit Houston, the main marketing arm of the city for tourism, leisure and convention travel had a lot to boast about in their 2015-2016 Annual Report. New development, record tourism travel, record hotel room night bookings and very favorable media rankings and coverage meant this report had a lot to say to a wide audience beyond the typical board and local business members and partners.
I needed to of course make note of the major sporting events Houston was hosting, but it was also important to communicate the many other aspects of Houston that helped bring those events to town and how these areas will be crucial to supporting these events.
Delivered electronically through a microsite and a PDF, the report needed to be flexible for presentations, display on tablets and viewed on computers. Click the button to see the horizontal parallax scrolling microsite in action – it came together great and really transformed this report into an artistic and inspiring piece of business material.
The characters were created with images of ink drops in water. Multiple drops were combined and re-colored to create the desired figure and more abstract clouds of ink were used as backdrops. The final edited images went on to appear on many other materials including graphics for Super Bowl LI, invitations, PR and brochure materials, posters and promotional items.
Below are some before and after images of the figures, drag the middle bar to reveal more on how these came together. These were created in Adobe Photoshop and the website was coded with HTML and CSS.
